Freeride: Backstage

Explore the best secret spots of the 3 Valleys. High mountain safety, technical coaching, and fresh snow with Elie Garcin, certified instructor.

Off-Piste With a French-Qualified Guide

Freeride terrain in the 3 Valleys isn't marked or patrolled the way groomed runs are, which is where many international visitors get caught out skiing off-piste alone or with an unqualified guide. I hold the French State ski instructor diploma, which covers avalanche terrain assessment as part of the training — not an add-on certificate bolted onto a standard ski lesson qualification.

From the hidden couloirs above Courchevel to the open bowls around Val Thorens, I choose the line based on that day's avalanche bulletin and snowpack, then coach your line choice, balance and rhythm in deep snow as we go.

What a Safety Briefing Actually Covers

Before we leave the piste, I run through your transceiver, shovel and probe, confirm you know how to use them under pressure — not just carry them — and walk through that morning's avalanche bulletin so you understand the reasoning behind the route, not just the route itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide safety equipment?
Yes, for all off-piste outings, I can provide the essential safety pack (transceiver, shovel, probe). I will also train you in its use.
What technical level is required for freeride?
A good level on red runs is the minimum. The idea is to be comfortable in all snow conditions. I adapt to your level to help you progress technically in complete safety.
Do we ski on glaciers?
Depending on conditions and your desire, we can explore the glacial sectors of Val Thorens (like the Gebroulaz glacier) for a unique high mountain experience.
How does a safety briefing work before a freeride outing?
Before each outing, I provide a full review of the day's snow conditions, the avalanche bulletin, and the safety equipment. I verify that each participant knows how to use their transceiver and we define the group progression rules together.
